Students will have reading instruction every day. The following lists the texts and focus for reading for the month of December:
Objectives: Determine Importance - Spotlight New Thinking: Identify and explain what is directly stated in the text; Use a graphic organizer or another note- taking technique to record important ideas or information (FQR); Distinguish between a fact and an opinion; Identify and explain the author’s opinion; Explain whether or not the author’s opinion is presented fairly

Vocabulary Words: courageous, refuge, rooting
SR: Which shows the author’s opinion in the text?
a) Under their fur, a polar bear has black skin.
b) A polar bear’s coat is made up of two layers.
c) You and most other animals might find living in the Arctic hard to “bear.”
d) In the summer, polar bears move inland and eat whatever they can find.
At the close of each story, students will be expected to complete selected response (multiple choice) questions as well as a BCR (Brief Constructed Response). The questions are based on the language and format used for the MSA (Maryland State Assessment). Please see examples of these questions below each objective group.
How to get a 3 on the BCR:
Step 1: Identify the key word or words that identify the skill in teh question.
Step 2: Identify the key information in the question needed to answer the quesiton.
Step 3: Respond to the question. Use a part of the question - the skill, to begin your response.
Step 4: Use details from the text to support your response.
Step 5: Put a little big of you, in every BCR that you do, so you won't get a 2. Add an inference that connects your response to the details. Relate the response and/or details to your life.
